We are very lucky to have several fabulous coaches and assistant coaches. They have all spent many years swimming (or watching their children swim!) before progressing into coaching and have a desire to pass on their love of the sport to the next generation of young swimmers.

Each squad has designated coaches, who get to know the swimmers in their groups very well so they can give them the best possible guidance to achieve their potential.

Erwin Dorland

Erwin is our Coaching Coordinator, overseeing the coaching team, providing advice and support to all the coaches and cover where necessary.  As well as his previous coaching experience, Erwin is a qualified Swimming Technical Official at J2 level and is keen on teaching correct stroke technique.  He currently holds a Swim England Level 1 Coaching award and is close to completing a Level 2 course. Erwin coaches our Performance Squads with Jess.

Jess Buckton

Jess has recently decided to step back from competitive swimming, where she swam at County level  and is now the primary coach for the Performance Squads.  Jess is a Level 1 qualified coach and holds the RLSS Lifeguard qualification.

Emma Dorland

A former competitive swimmer at county level, Emma has now decided to move into coaching and teaching. Emma is the coach for Competitive Squad as well as being one of our Swim Academy teachers. She has a Swim England Level 2 Teaching qualification and is a Level 1 Coach, as well as having completed a lifesaving award.

Elizabeth Blake

Elizabeth is the primary coach for Development Squad and is also one of our Swim Academy teachers.  Elizabeth says "As a previous swimmer with Team Jorvik, I used to regularly compete in swimming galas with the club, and at weekends I also volunteered as an assistant at the Academy. When I was seeking employment the natural course was for me to find something that I enjoyed so I took on the challenge of becoming a swimming teacher. I hold a Level 2 STA Teaching Award Qualification." Elizabeth has also completed a lifesaving award.

Gerry Gittins

Gerry has previously coached both the Viking and Development squads but now focuses on Development squad with Elizabeth. He is amazingly knowledgeable about all things swimming related and is great at passing on his enthusiasm for the sport to the younger children. Gerry is particularly focused on teaching good technique, knowing that this is essential groundwork for future competitive swimming stars.

Megan Shentall

Megan is one of our Swim Academy teachers and is the primary coach for Viking Squad.  An experienced swim teacher at her previous club, Megan is now at University in York and keen to continue doing what she loves.  She holds the STA Level 2 Award in Teaching Swimming.

Ben Pateman

Ben has regularly competed at County and Regional level.  With experience of coaching the younger swimmers at his previous club, he currently helps to coach Viking Squad.  Ben is a qualified lifeguard.

David Maxwell

Our former Head Coach, David is continuing his involvement with the Club by providing mentoring and development for our younger coaches, many of whom he coached and started on their journey into teaching and coaching.  David is a Swim England Level 2 qualified coach and Level 2 Swimming Teacher, with a wealth of experience in both coaching and swimming.  A former international swimmer himself, David coached four of our Performance Squad to the British Summer Nationals in the last two years.  His passion for the sport is second to none and he firmly believes that swimming is for life.

Helen Phillips

Helen has had various roles within Team Jorvik, to fit as best she can around her job as a Primary School teacher. She is currently helping us strengthen the team through mentoring and also covers for coaches when needed. She holds a Level 2 qualification as a swimming teacher and is a Level 1 qualified coach. Helen also has a lifesaving award.

Helen says: "I have been a swimming coach for 9 years. I started as a competitive swimmer at the age of 7 and competed at Regional level and continue to compete a little today. I began coaching as a volunteer for my swimming club, working with junior and age group swimmers. From here I got the coaching bug and branched out into teaching as well. I moved to York for university and was introduced to Team Jorvik. I began by teaching at the Academy and then was asked to do some coaching. I have now been with Team Jorvik for 5 years and I love working with the amazing swimmers and great committee. The children at the club inspire me with their dedication, commitment and passion for the sport."

Zak Moorcroft

A talented swimmer himself, winning medals at County level and swimming in several Regional Championships, Zak is enthusiastic about passing on his love of the sport and good technique to the kids he coaches. Zak holds the Swim England Level 1 Coaching award and is also RLSS Lifeguard trained. Zak has previously coached Competitive Squad, and now provides cover to all squads as necessary.

Elaine Pears

Elaine is a parent volunteer, whose children have been competitive swimmers with the club for over 11 years. She has a Level 1 Coaching award and a lifesaving award. Elaine principally works with Jess and Erwin to deliver sets to the Performance Squads, but provides cover to other squads as needed.
