We are very lucky to have several fabulous coaches and assistant coaches. Most have spent many years swimming before progressing onto coaching and all have a desire to pass on their love of the sport to the next generation of young swimmers.

Callum McHenery

Callum is primarily the Lead Coach for our two Performance squads. He has many years swimming experience and clearly has a passion for the sport, which he is keen to pass on to the swimmers he coaches. Callum has recently graduated from Bristol University where he swam for their Performance Squad. He also coached at the Bristol University Swimming Club.

Callum is particularly passionate about the importance of land training and strength and conditioning training for swimming. To this end he set up and ran a Strength and Conditioning Club at Bristol University.  He is also RLSS Lifeguard trained.

Helen Phillips

Helen has had various roles within Team Jorvik, to fit as best she can around her job as a Primary School teacher. She currently coaches Competitive Squad on Tuesdays and covers for other coaches when needed. She holds a Level 2 qualification as a swimming teacher and is a Level 1 qualified coach.

Helen says: "I have been a swimming coach for 9 years. I started as a competitive swimmer at the age of 7 and competed at Regional level and continue to compete a little today. I began coaching as a volunteer for my swimming club, working with junior and age group swimmers. From here I got the coaching bug and branched out into teaching as well. I moved to York for university and was introduced to Team Jorvik. I began by teaching at the Academy and then was asked to do some coaching. I have now been with Team Jorvik for 5 years and I love working with the amazing swimmers and great committee. The children at the club inspire me with their dedication, commitment and passion for the sport."

Jessica Fiveash

Jess is primarily the Lead Coach for our Competitive and My Sport My Way squads. She has extensive swim teaching experience and holds a Level 2 Teaching qualification, RLSS Lifeguard qualification, as well as being a Level 1 Swim Coach and Level 1 Triathlon Coach.

Zak Moorcroft

Gerry Gittins

Gerry primarily coaches the Viking and Development squads.  He is amazingly knowledgeable about all things swimming related and is great at passing on his enthusiasm for the sport to the younger children.  Gerry is particularly focused on teaching good technique, knowing that this is essential groundwork for future competitive swimming stars.

Elizabeth Blake

Elizabeth says "As a previous swimmer with Team Jorvik, I used to regularly compete in swimming galas with the club, and at weekends I also volunteered as an assistant at the Academy. When I was seeking employment the natural course was for me to find something that I enjoyed so I took on the challenge of becoming a swimming teacher. I hold a Level 2 STA Teaching Award Qualification and have been teaching with the Academy since the new year. I also coach Development Squad."

Emma Pears-Dorland

Emma also coaches Development Squad, as well as covering for Viking and Competitive Squads and assisting with lessons at our Swim Academy. A former competitive swimmer at county level, Emma has now decided to move into coaching and teaching. She currently has ASA Level 1 qualification (Teaching Assistant), will be completing her Level 2 Teaching in October, and is currently training as a Level 1 Coach.
