Coaches

Our Head Coach is David Maxwell. In addition, we have several other coaches and assistant coaches. Most have spent many years swimming before progressing onto coaching and all have a desire to pass on their love of the sport to the next generation of young swimmers.

David Maxwell

As Head Coach, David oversees all aspects of coaching within the club but primarily coaches Performance and Competitive squads. He has many years swimming experience and clearly has a passion for the sport, which he is keen to pass on to the swimmers he coaches. In his swimming career, David represented England at home nations internationals and was selected to the British Swimming Development Programme. He won a bronze medal in 400m IM at the British Youth Championships in 2012 (and also competed alongside Adam Peaty and Ross Murdoch in the 200m Breaststroke final)!

David is a Level 2 qualified Coach and Aquatics Teacher and has spent time shadowing top coaches in the US, as well as learning from coaches in England and Australia. He has also managed Learn-to-swim programmes, including running our Jorvik Swim Academy.

Helen Phillips

Helen has had various roles within Team Jorvik, to fit as best she can around her job as a Primary School teacher. She currently coaches Competitive Squad on Tuesdays and covers for David and other coaches when needed. She holds a Level 2 qualification as a swimming teacher and is a Level 1 qualified coach.

Helen says: "I have been a swimming coach for 9 years. I started as a competitive swimmer at the age of 7 and competed at Regional level and continue to compete a little today. I began coaching as a volunteer for my swimming club, working with junior and age group swimmers. From here I got the coaching bug and branched out into teaching as well. I moved to York for university and was introduced to Team Jorvik. I began by teaching at the Academy and then was asked to do some coaching. I have now been with Team Jorvik for 5 years and I love working with the amazing swimmers and great committee. The children at the club inspire me with their dedication, commitment and passion for the sport."

Elizabeth Blake

As a previous swimmer with Team Jorvik, I used to regularly compete in swimming galas with the club, and at weekends I also volunteered as an assistant at the Academy. When I was seeking employment the natural course was for me to find something that I enjoyed so I took on the challenge of becoming a swimming teacher. I hold a Level 2 STA Teaching Award Qualification and have been teaching with the Academy since the new year. I also coach Development Squad.
