Coaches

We are very lucky to have several fabulous coaches and assistant coaches. They have all spent many years swimming (or watching their children swim!) before progressing into coaching and have a desire to pass on their love of the sport to the next generation of young swimmers.

Each squad has designated coaches, who get to know the swimmers in their groups very well so they can give them the best possible guidance to achieve their potential.

Erwin Dorland

Erwin is our Coaching Coordinator, overseeing the coaching team, providing advice and support to all the coaches and cover where necessary.  He currently holds a Swim England Level 2 Coaching award and is a qualified Swimming Technical Official at J2 level. He is strongly focused on teaching correct stroke technique.  Erwin coaches our Performance Squad with Amy.

Amy Bettles

Amy has recently decided to step back from competitive swimming, where she swam at Regional level, and is now the primary coach for Performance Squad.  Amy is a Swim England Level 1 qualified coach.

Emma Dorland

A former competitive swimmer with the Club at county level, Emma decided to move into coaching and teaching. Emma is the coach for Competitive Squad and Swim Squad as well as being one of our Swim Academy teachers. She has a Swim England Level 2 Teaching qualification and is a Level 1 qualified Coach, as well as having completed a lifesaving award. Teaching good technique is Emma’s passion.

Laura Bettles

Laura has also recently decided to step back from competitive swimming, where she swam at Regional level, and is now the primary coach for the Development Squad.  Laura is a Level 1 qualified coach and holds the RLSS Lifeguard qualification.

Elaine Pears

Elaine is a parent volunteer, whose children have been competitive swimmers with the club for over 11 years. She has a Level 1 Coaching award and a lifesaving award. Elaine primarily works with Laura to coach Development Squad, but provides cover to other squads as needed.

Megan Shentall

Megan coaches our Vikings Squad.  An experienced swim teacher at her previous club, Megan is now at University in York and keen to continue doing what she loves.  She holds the STA Level 2 Award in Teaching Swimming.

Gill Virden

Gill also coaches Vikings Squad with Megan. She holds the STA level 2 Award and Certificate in Teaching Swimming, the STA level 2 Award in Safety for Teachers and the STA Level 2 Award in Aquatic Teaching – Baby and Pre-School. Gill has over 20 years’ experience as a primary school teacher in York which also stands her in good stead for this role!

Helen Phillips

Helen has coached in various roles within Team Jorvik over the years, and currently combines her job as a Primary School teacher with providing cover support across the squads as needed. A former Regional level swimmer who still competes in Masters competitions, Helen holds a Level 2 qualification as a swimming teacher and is a Level 1 qualified coach.

Helen says: "I love working with the amazing swimmers and great committee. The children at the club inspire me with their dedication, commitment and passion for the sport."

Jess Buckton

Jess was a competitive swimmer with the club, competing at County level before deciding to move into coaching. Jess is a Level 1 qualified coach. Jess is currently away studying at Art College, but provides cover as needed when home in York.

Zak Moorcroft

A talented swimmer himself, winning medals at County level and swimming in several Regional Championships, Zak is enthusiastic about passing on his love of the sport to the kids he coaches. Zak holds the Swim England Level 1 Coaching award and is also RLSS Lifeguard trained. Currently away studying at University, Zak provides cover as needed when he is at home in York.
