NER Long Course Championships May 2018

We had a record 14 swimmers with NER qualifying times this Spring: Joan, Alex M, Tom, Zak, Joe S, Eleanor, James, Jake, Callum, Laura, Amy, Meredith, Joe C and Aidan (the latter two swimmers achieving QTs for both the Open and the Age Group competitions).

The first weekend in May saw 9 of our squad competing at Ponds Forge in the Open Championships.  There were solid performances all round, with some great PBs swum by Joan (50m Back), Alex (50m Back), Jake (50m Back), Callum (50m & 100m Back) and Meredith (100m Fly).  The times achieved by Callum, Meredith and Aidan give them a very good chance of appearing on the qualifying lists for the Nationals when they are published at the end of this month.

The Age Group Championships were spread over the last two weekends in May and took place in Leeds.  On the first of these, Aidan came home with 2 hard-fought medals, both times impressively overcoming deficits to win Bronze in 100m Breast and Silver in 50m Breast.  Joe also qualified for the final in 50m Free and just missed out in 200m Free, finishing in a very creditable 11th place. They both finished the competition strongly: Joe achieved PBs in 400m Free and 50m Back, where he qualified in 7th place for the final (but elected not to swim again); Aidan qualified for the 200m Breast final, where he put in another great PB swim to finish in 4th place, narrowly missing out on another bronze medal.
